Packing your Own Box

Packing is a crucial part of your move. An organized and planned packing process will allow you to start your new life at your location quickly and easily. Brothers Moving & Storage have come up with some important tips in order for you to create a smooth packing process for your move.

  1. If you plan to do your own packing, start well in advance of moving day by packing the out of season items and items not being used daily. This avoids last minute rushing which causes stress and/or to forget other important details.
  2. Boxes should not exceed 50 lbs.
  3. A good packing rule: the smaller the box, the heavier contents can be, thus the larger the box the lighter the contents.
  4. Always have a parts box for screws, bolts, remotes, etc. and label them so they are easy to find at destination.
  5. When marking boxes, we suggest you mark contents and new location/room to be placed at destination-both on the top and on the side for easy identification.
  6. Mark fragile boxes as such.
  7. When marking up boxes, make sure to run tape in both directions perpendicular on the bottom and do the same on top when sealing the box.
  8. Make sure fragile items are cushioned on top and bottom and wrapped safely.
  9. Be generous with the cushioning material. NOTE: having less empty space in a box will help prevent damage.
  10. Don’t use printed newspaper as wrapping. The ink can transfer onto your belongings.

What to Pack in a Book Box

A book box is the smallest of moving boxes and is mainly used for packing books, magazines, desk drawers, papers and smaller heavier items.  When packing these items you want to make sure that you always put a piece of packing paper in the bottom of the box.   You want to make sure to place all of your books on edge in the box, alternating bound edges.  Make sure to use crumpled up paper to fill in any gaps in the box.  When you are finished use paper at the top of the box and make sure that you can’t push the box down.  If you can push the box in, crumple up some paper to fill in the air.  You want to make sure to tape the top and bottoms of all of your boxes, if you just fold them in the weight of the books will not make the box sturdy.  Last thing to do is to make sure that you label the box correctly.  You want to label the sides(not the top) of the boxes so when the movers are bringing the boxes into your new home they know which room they go in.

What to Keep

When packing your book box for your move, this is a great time to also evaluate your book collection.  Before you begin packing take some time and really go through your books.  Moving is a great time to de-clutter and get rid of the items that you no longer need.  The books that you may feel that you no longer need can be donated to charity and this will give many other people the opportunity to read great books as well.

Moving Tip Number Two

Moving Tip Number 2, Brothers Moving & Storage Waukesha, WIWinter Tips for A Flawless Move

Moving Tip Number two is going to give you some useful tips on what you can do to help make your move as flawless as possible during the winter months.  During the winter months the weather can change in a matter of seconds.  Snow and ice are  the two main culprits during this time of year, I will help to give you some ideas as to how to help your move go along smoothly during inclement weather.

Outside Weather Tip

With the outside weather being particularly messy this time of year, things can slow down during the move.  Movers have to deal with slippery ice and snow.  You as the customer are responsible for clearing a path for your movers.  When it snows you want to make sure to shovel all areas that the movers may need to walk, this includes sidewalks, driveways and all door areas and patios.  Once you are done clearing the snow, you want to make sure that you salt the area so that no ice forms.  In doing these steps, it insures that your move is able to be completed safely and efficiently.

Indoor Weather Tip

With the outside weather during this time of year being messy, we have some tips on keeping your inside clean during your move.  Brothers Moving & Storage has its crew lay down floor protection which is neoprene rug runners.  Doing this step helps to insure that the outside snow stays outside or on the rug runner.  If you would however like to protect your carpeting further, you can always purchase carpet shield.  If you visit our moving boxes page you can see that this is something we offer and can have the movers bring out on move day. Carpet shield is something that will help to further protect your carpeting.  You can also lay down old moving boxes on hardwood floor, this is something that Brothers Moving & Storage does have on their trucks sometimes, so feel free to ask the movers.

Moving Tip Number Two

Living in Wisconsin can be a beautiful thing, when the snow falls it makes for a beautiful setting, and this is a setting that should stay outdoors.  Always check your local weather to see if  your area is expecting any snow on your move day, and if it is just remember to follow moving tip number two and this will help to make sure your move is as flawless as possible.
